Hey Makeup Lovers!

 Today I’m doing a review and a tutorial of Too Faced’s Italian Spritz eyeshadow palette.

Before I even saw the shades, I knew I had to get this palette because, well, I’m half Italian😄

But Italian or not, this palette has the prettiest eyeshadows perfect for summer (and for fall if fashion week is any indication).

So read on for a review and tutorial I created just for you using the Too Faced Italian Spritz eyeshadow palette.

Review 

The vibrant colors aren’t reserved for just the eyeshadows themselves. 

The palette is warm and inviting with two glasses of Italian spritz on the cover.

The outer layer of the packaging is made of tin and is pretty sturdy, so it would likely hold up well for travelling.

When you open the palette, you are greeted by the sweet scent of citrus as your eyes dart between the beautiful bright and sparkling colors. 

There is also a decent sized mirror that makes this the perfect palette for on-the-go.

The tagline: “Transport yourself to Lake Como, Italy (without the airfare) with this sparkling fresh eye shadow palette, inspired by our favorite summer cocktail!”

I’ve never actually been to Lake Como (my ancestors would be so disappointed in me), but I can say that this palette gives me all the feels of what I imagine it would be like sipping a cocktail on Lago di Como. 

The shadows are a beautiful range of eye catching colors. With a variety of finishes: matte, metallic, shimmer, and special effect (Como After Dark) there is an eyeshadow for whatever look you want to create each day.

Pros: Buttery soft and super saturated mattes, foil-like metallics, and sparkling shimmers are major highlights of this palette. 

They all have terrific staying power, even on the most humid days.

They blend easily and the shade range compliments each one nicely.

The special effects shade, Como After Dark, has silver shimmer, glitter and a fine pearl finish. Quite special indeed.

 

Cons: Although minimal there is some shadow fallout. Mostly with the metallic and shimmer shades.

A couple of the shades are a little less pigmented and require some layering.

The warm and cool tones work beautifully together for universally flattering looks on all skin tones.

Final Thoughts: With the bright vibrant colors and pretty decent shade range this palette is as appealing to the eye as an Italian spritz on a hot day. 

Beyond the aesthetics the shadows are long lasting and blendable.

The minor fallout and extra layering for a few shades isn't a dealbreaker for me.

I'm very pleased with my purchase and would buy this palette again.

Tutorial

Now for a step-by-step tutorial of one of the looks I created using Too Faced's Italian Spritz eyeshadow palette.

1.  Espresso Yourself and Spaghett About It!

Take Espresso Yourself (Matte auburn) on a crease brush and work it through the crease of the eye, blending and building color. Then use a blending brush to soften the line for a diffused effect.

Next, sweep the shade Spaghett About It (Matte burnt sienna) across the eyelid and cover it from crease to lash line.

2. Take Me to Church + a Flat Brush

On a flat brush take the shade Take Me to Church (Cinnamon metallic) and press it and pack it onto the eyelid right over Spaghett About It. It might take a little time to build up shade intensity for Take Me to Church, but just keep layering the shade and you’ll get the metallic color I did.

3. Lake & Bake + Lake Como

With a small eyeshadow brush apply Lake Como (Navy blue metallic) to the outer ‘V’ of the eyelid and create a broad wing effect as you work towards the end of the eye.

On another small eyeshadow brush -- there will be leftover shadow if you use the same one -- dust the shade Lake Como (Baby blue shimmer) onto the inner corners of the eyes and a little onto the lower lash line.

4. Gelat-Ohh! and a side of Grappa Don’t Preach

Sweep the shade Gelat-Ohh! (Matte ivory) onto the brow bone for a nice highlight to frame your shadow work.

With an eyeliner or brow brush trace the shade Grappa Don’t Preach (Gold metallic) along the lower lash line until it meets Lake Como and run it just under Lake and Bake for a wing-like look.

5. Blending Brush + Liner & Mascara

Next use a blending brush to blend the seams of our three shadows on the eyelid so they will merge together nicely.

Grab your favorite black liquid liner and trace along the top lash line.

Do the same with a pencil liner and the lower water line.

Then, take a volumizing mascara in black and swipe it on top and bottom lashes to pull the eye look together.

6. Concealer + Contour & Highlight 

Dust off any shadow fallout with a fluffy brush then take your favorite concealer and clean up the under eyes.

Use a contour and highlight shade to add definition to the face.

7. Cream Blush & Lip Stick

Finish off the look with a cream blush and lip stick for a natural flush. This way the look won't be too overpowering with already full-on eyes.

And finally we have...

Our finished Too Faced Italian Spritz eyeshadow look!

The metallic shades are so pretty and reflective while the shimmers give a soft sparkle.

Adding a black liner and mascara really gives extra definition to the lash line and a nice contrast to the eyeshadow shades.

Connecting the metallic and shimmer shades gives extra dimension to the eye and enhances the shape.

The warm and cool color play nicely together to create depth and richness in the eye look.

This palette is fun and playful for summer, but hold onto it for fall.

This autumn bright, electric shades for eyes will be a big trend. Color blocking two shades on lids and lashes in particular is supposed to be very in style this fall.

Kansas City Chiefs | Inspired Makeup Tutorial

UPDATED for 2024

Hey there, makeup and football fans!

In honor of Super Bowl LVIII (58) today I'm doing a Kansas City Chiefs inspired makeup tutorial.

I have a brand new San Francisco 49ers tutorial coming too so stay tuned for that. 

I have mixed emotions about KC. 

They knocked my Buffalo Bills out of contention a week ago😞

But I'm a fan of Taylor Swift's music so...

There is no "Bad Blood" here 😉

And just you wait for next season (Don't Stop Bill-ievin' 😁)

I originally posted this tutorial last year when the Kansas City Chiefs were in Super Bowl LVII.

But, I've updated a few things and added duplicates for products that have since been discontinued.

Kansas City Chiefs colors are primarily red and yellow-gold with some white accents.

I went searching for a yellow eyeliner (not something I typically have in my makeup kit) and found a pretty decent option (although it broke when I used it 😅).

How to Create a Kansas City Chiefs Inspired Makeup Look

1. Matte Red Eyeshadow: Not a go-to shade for most, but it is absolutely essential for this look.

Take the shadow and layer it on eyelids, building color to get a nice opaque red.

Cover the lids stopping right at the crease and rounding the shadow as you meet the crease. 

I used NYX Primal Colors in Hot Red which is the best red eyeshadow I have ever used. I'm so disappointed that NYX discontinued this color.

You can get a pretty close shade in their Ultimate Edit Petite Shadow Palette in Phoenix (50% off right now on their website). 

Also, MAC Cosmetics Powder Kiss Eyeshadow in Werk, Werk, Werk is very similar.

2. Yellow-Gold Eyeliner: Next we need a yellow/gold eyeliner. I ran the liner across my upper lash line a few times until I got the color I wanted. 

Wing the liner out just a little bit. Also take the liner into the inner corners of the eyes.

I used Colourpop Crème Gel Liner in Toucan Do It. 

It broke as I was using it. I thought maybe I was applying too much pressure on the eyeliner so I pressed lighter. A few minutes later it broke again.

I've never had a liner break while I was using it before.

I have Colourpop's Crème Gel Liner in Swerve, a black shade, and have used it many times without any breakage.

Maybe the pigments that give this one the yellow shade are softer?

Whatever the case, if you use this yellow liner be aware that it could break.

3. White Eyeliner & Eyeshadow: Take a white eyeliner pencil and run it along the lower water line of the eye.

Then use a matte white eyeshadow and trace it through the lower lash line.

Use the same white shade on the brow bone to give a nice highlight and add that pop of white.

I used a white eyeliner pencil from N.Y.C. Color Cosmetics. It has since been discontinued.

But, NYX Slim Eye Pencil in White is a nice alternative.

The eyeshadow I used is 'Glitch' from Urban Decay's Wired pressed pigment palette.

If you don't have that palette Sephora Collection Sephora Colorful® Eyeshadow in Let it Snow is a lovely matte white shade.

     

4. Mascara + Highlighter & Blush: Give the eye makeup a dramatic contrast with a black volumizing mascara on the top and bottom lashes. 

Then use a shimmery white highlighter on the top of the cheek bones and on the high points of the face.

I used the red eyeshadow as a blush and blended it into the apples of the cheeks for a subtle flush.

5. Red Liquid Lipstick: With a liquid lipstick trace around your lip line, like a liner, and then fill in the rest of the lips with the glossy red lipstick.

I used NYX Xtreme Lip Cream in Absolute Red which has been discontinued also (come on, NYX!)

But Colourpop's Fresh Kiss Glossy Lip Stain in Big Apple is very close.

And finally we have...

Our Kansas City Chiefs inspired makeup look!

Red is definitely the main color in this makeup look. Eyeshadow, lips and accented by the gold and white.

I considered purchasing a white mascara but that seemed like it might be overkill (because this look is so subtle? 😄).

You could always add a little gold shimmer or loose glitter as a topper for the lipstick.

Shania Twain | 'Man! I Feel Like a Woman!' Inspired | Makeup Tutorial | 90s Icon

Hi Lovelies! 

Today I’m digging up serious 90’s nostalgia and creating a makeup tutorial of one the most iconic artists of the decade: Shania Twain.

 The first CD I ever bought (yes, you read that right, CD) was Shania Twain’s Come On Over.

I was probably six or seven when I saw the music video for her mega popular hit Man! I Feel Like a Woman. 

Its nod to Robert Palmer’s music videos wasn’t lost on me, but was greatly overshadowed by Shania’s incredible makeup; full-on smoky eyes, over the top contour. 

Maybe this was when my love for makeup was born. Who knows. But what I do know is that the makeup look for that video will forever be a classic for makeup lovers.

I’ve wanted to recreate this makeup for quite a while, but have actually been a little nervous to attempt it because I really wanted to do it justice.

The Essentials to Recreate Shania Twain’s Man! I Feel Like a Women Makeup

A Blending Brush

Since a black smoky eye is the anchor of this look a good blending brush is absolutely essential.

There are a lot of blending brushes on the market. Some are really decent. 

What you want to look for in a blending brush is for it to be firm enough to buff the eyeshadow or liner, but also soft and fluffy enough to smudge and diffuse harsh lines. 

Not all blending brushes are created equal.

My go-to blending brush is MAC Cosmetics 217 brush. If you watch any of my videos you will notice that I use it in nearly every one. It is that perfect balance of textures.

Retailing at $29 it sounds pretty pricy, and it is. But if you take care of it and clean it regularly this brush will last you for a very long time. 

I’ve had the one I used in this video since I think 2014 and it is just as fantastic as the day I bought it.

 

Expert Tip: Start with a clean blending brush, especially for this smoky eye, you will get way better results.

Matte Black Eyeshadow

There is no question that black eyeshadow is necessary for this smoky look. Shania was wearing matte black eyeshadow so that’s what I went with too.

Not just any black eyeshadow will do. Often they are powdery or patchy. 

You want one with buildable coverage and a good level opacity. 

I went with another MAC product. No, I am not affiliated with MAC nor do I get any incentive for recommending them. The products needed for this look are products that MAC does well.

I used MAC’s Carbon eyeshadow. It is very buildable and perfectly blendable, ideal for a smoky eye. Pairs perfectly with their 217 blending brush.

Concealer

A big part of this smoky eye look is clean up.

Even the best of powder eyeshadows have a small amount of fall out - little specks of shadow that fall under the eyes.

But, that's no reasons to shy away from using it. Most fallout can be easily cleaned up with a liquid concealer in a shade close to your skin tone.

The key is to keep wiping your brush (or finger) after each swipe on a tissue so you don't spread the shadow flecks all over your under eye area.

Another benefit of using concealer for this look is you can achieve the sharpest smoked wing by swiping it up around you eye (see video for demonstration).

I used Maybelline's Fit Me Concealer in Ivory. A very affordable concealer that works wonders for covering under eye circles, cleaning up fall out, and camouflaging blemishes.

Contour 

Shania has a seriously strong matte contour in the video on the jaw bone, cheek, hairline, and nose.

It is buffed out a bit with the blush and accentuated by the highlighter.

The sharp angles add to the overall fierceness of this look.

I used one of the shades from NYX Highlight & Contour Pro Palette (I also used the highlighter shades in there).

This relatively inexpensive palette gives you four pressed powder contour shades and four pressed powder highlighters so you can perfect any look you could possibly want to create.

A little goes a long way with these colors so you will have this palette for quite a while.

Muted Peach Lipstick

Finding the right shade of lipstick to match the one Shania wore in the video drove me crazy.

I looked through all of my lip colors and nothing was right. 

I even tried mixing some shades together but still couldn't match it perfectly.

Finally, I broke down and went to Ulta Beauty. They had NYX Smooth Whip Lip Cream in Kitty Belly, which turned out to be an ALMOST perfect shade for this look.

One major difference is that the finish is matte. Shania's had a slight glossiness to it.

But it was easy enough to add a clear gloss as a top coat.

Now that we've nailed down the essential products to recreate Shania Twain's Man! I Feel Like a Woman! makeup here is a step-by-step breakdown of how I went about it.

1. Matte Black Eyeshadow + Shading Brush:

Place and packet the black eyeshadow on to the eyelid using a short shading brush.

Concentrate the color mainly on the lid at this point.

2. Blend + Build & Blend + Build:

With a blending brush start buffing out the black shadow up into the crease and out of the eye to begin a smoky wing.

The next bit takes some patience as it consists of adding color and then blending it to get a diffused smoky effect in the shape that we want. See my video for a more detailed look.

3. Black & White Liner and More Black Eyeshadow:

Run a thin strip of black liquid liner just along the lash line to intensify lashes. Wing it out just a tiny bit.

Use a black pencil liner in the lower water line of the eyes to enhance the dramatic eye look.

On a small angled brush trace the same black shadow across the lower lash line and give it a small wing leaving a tiny gap between it and the liner on the upper lash line.

Take a white liquid liner and create a small flick of color right between the two black lines.

4. Mascara & Concealer Clean Up:

The lashes are probably the most natural part of this makeup look. She doesn't appear to be wearing false lashes so I just swiped on a volumizing mascara on the top & bottom lashes.

Next comes the clean up. Dot concealer all over under eyes and around the nose. As you sweep and blend the concealer to remove fall out, take it up higher and create a sharp wing out of the smoked out eyeshadow.

5. Matte Contour, Highlighter & Blush:

Go big and bold with the contour working it between the cheek and jaw bone starting near the middle of the ear down to around the apples of the cheeks. Work it under the jaw bone, into the hairline, and down the slope of the nose.

Hit the spaces in between the contour color with highlighter.

Use a neutral toned rose blush on the apples of the cheeks and blend it into the contour shade.

Use a pure white shimmer highlighter (one of the only not-matte products) on a small brush and gently tap it on top of the blush on the apples of the cheeks.

6. Peach Lipstick, Gloss & Setting Foundation:

Optional: I used a sienna shade lip liner but that isn't a must.  

Sometimes she appears to be wearing a lip liner, sometimes she doesn't. It depends on the scene in the music video.

Pop a muted peach liquid lipstick on the lips. 

The one I used was matte so I added a clear gloss as a topper.

To set everything in place I pressed a matte powder foundation onto my face.

And finally we have reached the end of our tutorial!

Maybe not a perfect replica but it is very similar.

I could've blended out the contour a bit more, especially on my right.

Shania and I also look noting alike, so there's that too 😅

I'd love to do a side-by-side photo with a screenshot from Shania's music video, but I'm fairly certain that could be construed as copyright infringement (none intended).

The dramatic smoky eye is really the cornerstone of this look.

I could've darked the shadow one more time to better match the intensity of the video look, but I think the shape and idea is pretty similar.

I don't own the top hat, the veil, or the trench coat but I still had a lot of fun recreating the makeup look of one of my favorite artists!
