Esme Squalor | A Series of Unfortunate Events | Makeup Part 2

Dear Reader,

If you are looking for a blog post about a cheerful young adult spending a jolly time playing with makeup, look elsewhere. Because this is just another miserable post of the unlucky looks of the characters from A Series of Unfortunate Events. It is my solemn duty to stay up all night researching and recreating these hapless makeup looks, but you may be more comfortable getting a good night's sleep. In that case, you should probably choose another post.

(Paraphrased from Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events Book the Fifth: The Austere Academy)

This post is part two of my Esme Squalor Ersatz Elevator makeup look (if you're a glutton for misfortune click here to see part 1).
This look is from the second half (Episode 4 of Season 2) where Esme is at the very "in" auction.

What You Will Need

1. Gray Shimmer & Matte Beige Eyeshadow: A nice dark gray with silver shimmer on the outer 2/3 of the eye and a matte beige on the inner 1/3 gives Esme's polished appearance.
2. Satin Black & Bright White Shimmer Eyeshadow: Black shadow with a satin finish for the crease and a bright white shimmer shadow to highlight the brow bone and inner corner.
3. Black Liquid Liner, Mascara, & Lashes: A quick swipe of black liner across the top lash line, lengthening mascara, and ideally, corner lashes (my lashes didn't work out so I used three mascaras to get the desired results)
4. Contour, Highlight, Blush: These products are what we use to try to sculpt the face to get a similar shape and light appearance as the actress on the show.
5. White Eyeliner & Black Shadow: White liner for the lower water line and the shadow traced around the lower lash line for more intensity (as if Esme needs any more).
6. Dark Purple or Black Lipstick: Either a very dark purple lipstick or a black lipstick with a purple top coat.

My sister made the hat and I glued on the feathers (I am clearly not a hat designer, haha).
Check out my sister's Instagram for more fun projects

Those feathers were insanely expensive, that's why our re-creation only has two.

As mentioned above, the lashes that I planned to use did not work out.
So, I used Benefit's They're Real! Mascara (let it dry), Doucce's Maxlash Volumizer Mascara (let it dry), then on top of that I used Urban Decay's Perversion Mascara.
Not quite as perfect as it would have been with lashes but I still like the results.

For the lip color I definitely should have covered my lips with concealer first and then added the color. It took several coats and two different shades to build up intensity so, learn from my mistakes! :)

Esme Squalor | A Series of Unfortunate Events | Makeup Part 1

Dear Reader,
I hope for your sake you have not chosen to read this post because you are looking for a pleasant experience. If that is the case, I advise you to close this tab instantaneously, because of all the posts describing the makeup looks of A Series of Unfortunate Events characters, this one might be the unhappiest yet.

(Paraphrased from Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events Book the Fourth: The Miserable Mill)

We are now about to go even further down the rabbit hole with the next few unfortunate looks.
Up next we have Esme Gigi Genevieve Squalor, the City's sixth most important financial advisor, wife of Jerome Squalor, and the Baudelaire orphan's sixth guardian.
This is part one of two of her looks in The Ersatz Elevator.

Neil Patrick Harris, Malina Weissman, Lucy Punch, Louis Hynes, Presley Smith

Esme is portrayed by actress Lucy Punch, who in my humble opinion totally nails the character!
Esme is very stylish and is always well informed of what is "in" and what is "out".
Orphans become "in" and Esme is thrilled to be the guardian of the Baudeliares, reveling at thought of her friends being sick with envy at her newly achieved status.

What Will You Need?

1. Shimmer Eyeshadows: A warm gray shimmer for 2/3 of the lid and a frosty beige shimmer for the inner 1/3 of the lid to achieve Esme's shadow for the first half of The Ersatz Elevator.
2. Liquid Liner & Lashes: Black liner along the top lash line and some corner lashes (or full strips with extra length on the outer corners).
3. Black Eyeshadow & White Eyeliner: Apply the white liner to the bottom water line. Use the black shadow on an angled brush to trace around the lower lash liner.
4. Light Contour Shade, Beige Highlighter & Natural Blush: Contour lightly under the jawline, highlight the high points, and apply blush to the apples of the cheeks.
5. A Nude Lipstick with Slight Mauve Undertones: For the first part of The Ersatz Elevator, Esme's lip color is very subtle.

Esme's makeup in the first half of the Ersatz Elevator is probably the most subdued of all of her makeup looks throughout the second season. But her hats...

Her Napoleon-esque hat that she wears to the Café Salmonella.

My attempt at recreating her hat. It barely fit in the frame!
My talented sister made this hat for me, check out her Instagram for more interesting projects.

As well as this interesting piece, I'm sure it's "in"

Olivia Caliban | A Series of Unfortunate Events | Makeup (3 Looks in 1!)

Dear Reader:
If you have not read any of my blog posts about the makeup looks of A Series of Unfortunate Events, then before you read even one more sentence you should know that this post is filled with unhappy and wretched details. Of all the blog posts of ASOUE makeup, the one you are currently reading may be the worst of them all.
You should decide for yourself whether you can possibly endure this miserable post.

(Paraphrased from Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events Book the Third: The Wide Window)

Time for another unfortunate look, actually three unfortunate looks (I know, who would have thought for that price!)
Today's look is of Olivia Caliban portrayed by the lovely Sara Rue.
Olivia Caliban is the Librarian at Prufrock Prep, the private school which the Baudelaire orphans end up attending.
Olivia becomes a loyal volunteer and does her best to rescue the Baudelaire (and Quagmire) orphans. Ms. Caliban is technically not in the book series (unless you count book the ninth, more on that later), but she is wonderful addition to the brave volunteers who risk their lives to put out fires, both literally and figuratively.

The Vile Village

What Will You Need to Recreate These Looks?

1. Matte Eyeshadows: Browns and taupes will give a nice contour to the eye, since Olivia's eye makeup was more natural.
2. Liquid Liner and False Lashes: Lashes that are fuller at the outer corner give Olivia's subtle cat eye. Liquid liner helps the lash seam to look more natural.
3. White Eyeliner Pencil: To get a wider eye look, line lower waterline with white.
4. Contour & Highlight, Subtle Blush: A light, blendable contour shade, a little highlight around the eyes, and a natural blush for a subtle flush.
5. Lipsticks in Varying Shades of Rose: The most distinct change in Olivia's makeup throughout the first three "books" (six episodes) is her lip color.
